Alpha at St. John Brebeuf is cancelled until further notice

We are following Archdiocese of Chicago instructions, and currently all groups, meetings, and events are cancelled at St. John Brebeuf until further notice.

The videos through today's session (March 16th) are below, along with the discussion questions. Feel free to watch them and discuss them with your family or with friends via phone. If you have questions you can reach Liz McGowen at

As soon as our session resumes we will post information on our website and on Facebook.

Video 1:

Discussion:  Get to know you games

Question: If it turned out there was a God after all, and you could ask one question, what would it be?

Video 2:

What did you think or feel about the talk?

What makes you happy?

What do you think about Jesus?

If you had a chance to meet Jesus, how would you feel and what would you say to Him?

Before you heard the talk tonight, what was your concept of Jesus? Has it changed? If so, in what way?

What aspects of the evidence presented tonight did you find convincing/not convincing?

Video 3:

What did you think or feel about the talk?

What does the word "forgiveness" mean to you?

Have you ever had to forgive anyone? How did you do it?

What does the word "sin" mean to you?

What is your reaction to Jesus's death?

Video 4:

What did you think or feel about the talk?

What does faith mean to you?

What do you think about the evidence for Christianity that was presented here?

How can a person have faith in someone that he/she can't see?

More about Alpha

Alpha is an opportunity to explore life and the Christian faith in a friendly, open, and informal environment.

Alpha started in 1977 in England, in a church called Holy Trinity Brompton. It was originally used as a course for new Christians or those new to the church. In 1991, a young pastor named Nicky Gumbel took over leading Alpha, and he observed that it was effective at connecting with people outside of the church.

Alpha focuses on fostering relationships between people. It intentionally creates a safe environment where people can share their opinions and points of view, no matter what they might be. Today, it is estimated that over 30 million people have done Alpha globally.

Here at St. John Brebeuf, a small pilot group began meeting in spring 2019. In Fall 2019, we offered our first Alpha group and had 35 participants. It was amazing!

Our next Alpha group begins February 24, 2020 -- and we invite you to join us!

What to Expect during Alpha

At St. John Brebeuf, each evening session takes place in the Parish Ministry Center. We begin at 6:30 pm with an informal dinner. Next is a brief video presentation led by one of the original Alpha developers, Nicky Gumbel. We then discuss the evening’s topic in small groups. We finish by 8:15.

The Alpha sessions look like this:

February 24:  Is There More to Life Than This?

March 2:  Who is Jesus?

March 9:  No Alpha -- Join us for the English Lenten Mission at 7:00 pm in the church

March 16:  How Can I Have Faith?

March 23:  Why and How Do I Pray?

March 30: Why and How Should I Read the Bible?

April 13:  How Does God Guide Us?

Alpha "Weekend" -- Saturday, April 18, 9 am - 3 pm:

Introduction to the Weekend

Who is the Holy Spirit?

How Can I be Filled with the Holy Spirit?

What Does the Holy Spirit Do?

How Can I Make the Most of the Rest of My Life?

April 20:  How Can I Resist Evil?

April 27:  Why and How Should I Tell Others?

May 4:  Does God Heal Today?

May 11:  What About the Church?

What do people say about their Alpha experience?

“It was wonderful! I looked forward to each weekly meeting and connecting with newfound friends interested in learning about their faith. I learned a lot from the presentations. The food was great, too. It was low stress and I liked that I didn’t have to prepare and could just be.”

“I was not sure what Alpha was all about and how effective it would be. It was a good experience. Great discussions. Helped deepen my faith.”

We hope you will join us! Please sign up today at the parish office (or call 847-966-8145) or at so we know how many people to expect!

Note: If you are not able to join Alpha for the Spring session but would still like to be involved, we invite you to join our Alpha Prayer Group. This group prays for our participants, for the team, and for the success of the program. Please let us know if you are interested.
