About this event

What is a new horizon? It could be an unexplored area, a distant goal, a new path or direction to follow. It could be a gratefully felt change in our lives after the time of the devious virus. It could be an outward pushing of musical boundaries. It was the name given to the first NASA exploratory mission to Pluto and the even more distant Kuiper Belt in 2006. But to us, the path to follow on our next concert includes musical regions which sounded new -- in the recent past.

At our next concert - NEW HORIZONS - on September 24, you will hear the following wonderful sounds: the moving Suite for Clarinet, Violin and Piano by the jazz-influenced French composer Darius Milhaud; the Suite for Trio - Violin, Clarinet and Piano by Alexander Arutiunian, the Armenian composer and pianist, widely known for his 1950 Trumpet Concerto; the fun Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano Trio by Claude Bolling; and the surprising Powerhouse by Raymond Scott in its original sextet version for clarinet, trumpet, tenor sax, piano, bass, and drums.

Our concert time is 7:00 PM on Friday, September 24. Please note that our venue is the spacious Thomas May Parish Ministry Center at St. John Brebeuf, 8305 N. Harlem Avenue, Niles IL 60714 (NOT in the Church at 8307 N. Harlem as has been our custom).

On its rendezvous NASA’s New Horizons Mission to Pluto transmitted tremendous images of the planet in 2015 which had never before been seen. What do you see in this image? Pluto is dominated by the feature informally yet unmistakably named the “Heart,” which measures approximately 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers) across. Could this “heart” be the message we need to see from the cosmos? What if all motivations were replaced by this symbol in the heavens, and our needs and wants and ill-fated politics were moved aside to ensure that our own planet is treated with love. Need anything more to understand that our home is calling out to us for change? There is only one Earth. What lasts? Stephen Sondheim tells us that it is children and art. In the big picture, there is only love.
