Liturgical Music during COVID-19

  • For the most current information on liturgical and sacramental schedules, check the SJB homepage.
  • Due to scientific research that indicates group singing in particular allows transmission of the COVID-19 virus, congregational singing has been temporarily suspended out of an abundance of caution.
  • The English 5:00 pm and Polish 6:30 pm Saturday (anticipated) Masses are livestreamed on the SJB Facebook page, later appearing on YouTube with links on our website.
  • The anticipated English Mass on Saturday and the Sunday 9:00 am, 10:45 am, and 6:00 pm Masses in English are sung by the SJB cantors (members of the SJB Adult Chorale and the Niles Metropolitan Chorus). The anticipated Polish Mass on Saturday and the Sunday 12:30 pm and 2:00 pm Masses in Polish are sung by a cantor and organist.
  • The Ordinary of the Mass is sung to settings largely familiar to the parish, as is the growing repertoire of the Proper of the Mass. Hymns and songs are also drawn from the known, although we are using this time to introduce new texts and melodies occasionally, despite the hymnals being removed from our pews.
  • Below please find information as is normally found regarding our music ministry. Pray that we return soon to the activities which allow us to gather in groups and to let our musical prayer rise like incense.

ENSEMBLES and MORE

You fit in. The SJB Music Ministry is full of people just like you. Join Us! Call 847-966-8145 or send an email.

We’d love to have you join us for the entire season, but if that isn't possible, consider participating for a portion of the season, perhaps just for Advent-Christmas, Lent, Holy Week, the Easter Season, perhaps for sacramental celebrations such as Confirmation or other special occasions. All rehearsals are held in the Church Music Rehearsal Room (MRR) at the East Entrance.

ADULT CHORALE                Thursday rehearsals 7 – 8:30 PM (currently suspended due to COVID-19)
The men and women of the Adult Chorale sing a variety of music, from chant to contemporary music for the 10:45 Mass, three Sundays each month. All are welcome. (September – May)

NILES METROPOLITAN CHORUS    Tuesday rehearsals 7:00 – 9:30 PM (currently suspended)

Begun in 2013, an adult ecumenical community chorus is based at St. John Brebeuf. Join with singers from the community at large to explore the beauty of the choral repertoire.

(September – May)

LIFETEEN CHOIR & BAND        (currently suspended)
LifeTeen Choir is open to all teens. Teens sing at the LifeTeen Mass one Sunday of the month at 6:00 PM. Instrumentalists are most welcome.

(September – May)

CHILDREN’S CHOIR

Tuesday 2:00 - 3:00 PM             SJB GLORIA Choir (Grades 3-4) in the School (currently suspended)

Tuesday 5:00 - 6:00 PM             SJB LAUDATE Choir (Grades 5-8 and RE Students) (currently suspended)
Rehearsals are held
in the Church Music Rehearsal Room.

The Children's Choir has open membership for students providing music once each month at the 10:45 AM Sunday Family Mass and weekly at the school Mass. Throughout the year the SJB Children's Choir is invited to perform at special events and choral festivals. Parents are asked to offer assistance in managing the Children's Choir at rehearsal and before and after Mass. Members are expected to participate for the full school year. (September – May) Click here for details.

HAND BELL CHOIR            (currently suspended)
A multi-generational group of instrumentalists offer their music at the Family Mass. Music reading skills are especially helpful and taught in rehearsal. (September – May)

THE MINISTRY OF CANTOR
Parish cantors are selected by friendly audition. Membership in one of the choirs is a good way to receive the training that can prepare one to be a cantor. Cantors are scheduled to sing as available and are needed for Holy Days, Weddings and Funeral Masses throughout the year.

INSTRUMENTALISTS
Add a special touch and enhance our worship at SJB through solo instrumental music. Talented individuals are encouraged to share their gifts.

MUSIC LIBRARIANS
The crucial role of Music Librarian may be for you. No singing or instrumental playing is required. Organizational skills are helpful to keep the library open to all music groups.
